Man, Woman From Northern Westchester Caught With Drugs After Traffic Stop

A man and woman are facing drug charges after a traffic stop in Putnam, authorities say.

Police observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation on Oscawana Lake Road in the Town of Putnam Valley and pulled the vehicle over on Friday, Jan. 25 around 8:30 p.m.

Further investigation revealed that the vehicle container heroin, hypodermic needles, and marijuana. The vehicle’s driver, 25-year-old James Coffey of Staten Island, and the passenger, 28-year-old Raven Taverna of Peekskill, were arrested.

Coffey’s charges include:

  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Possession of a hypodermic instrument, a Class A misdemeanor

Taverna’s charges include:

  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Criminal possession of a hypodermic needle, a Class A misdemeanor

Both subjects were processed and issued appearance tickets before being released on $100 bail. Coffey and Taverna are scheduled to appear in the Town of Putnam Valley Justice Court at a future date.
